Yoto alternative: audio bedtime stories without a player
Most parents searching for a Yoto alternative want one of two things: to avoid buying another device and a growing stack of cards, or stories that are not the same recording every night. A story app on the phone or tablet you already own covers both. With Wunderli, a parent shapes characters, world and mood from their child's ideas, and Wunderli writes a new story and narrates it as an audio play, with the screen off while your child listens. If your child is young enough that they should pick and start their own audio, Yoto is built for exactly that and remains the better choice.
All facts about Yoto on this page come from Yoto's own UK website, uk.yotoplay.com, checked on 9 October 2026.
What Yoto does well
Yoto is a screen-free audio player that runs on cards. A child slots a Yoto Card into the player and it plays. According to Yoto's UK site (Yoto, 2026), the range includes Yoto Player 4th Gen, made for the family home with a full-panel night light, and the smaller Yoto Mini 4th Gen, which is water and dust resistant to IP67 for travel. Both have a Green Button with day and night playlists of up to 20 titles each, so a child can reach favourites without a card.
Three things stand out from what Yoto describes:
- A large, familiar library. Yoto lists "1,000+ Yoto Cards" across stories, music, learning and podcasts, with authors and brands such as Julia Donaldson, Roald Dahl, Disney and Harry Potter.
- Independence for young children. Yoto says its players are "suitable for children 3 years and up" and that younger children can listen "with caregivers handling the device". The controls are designed for small hands.
- Your own audio. With Make Your Own cards (Yoto, 2026), you can record stories in the Yoto App or add your own audio, up to 100 tracks per card.
For bedtime, the Yoto App (Yoto, 2026) lets you set a timer to turn the player off, control the night light and set volume limits. The player's display also works as a clock with an okay-to-wake cue.
What changes with a story app instead
A story app removes the hardware and changes who is in charge. Instead of a child choosing a card, an adult opens the app, makes a few choices with the child, and starts the story. That shift has consequences in both directions.
What you gain: nothing extra to buy or store, stories that start from your child's own idea rather than from a shelf, and the option to switch language. Wunderli writes every story in German, French or English, at three language levels.
What you give up: your child cannot start a story alone, and the phone or tablet is the speaker, so it stays in the room while the story plays, with the screen off. Wunderli also has no night light, clock or wake-up alarm. If those are the features you rely on, a player such as Yoto does more.
Yoto and Wunderli side by side

Audio bedtime stories from a story app: what an evening looks like
You sit down with your child and open Wunderli. Over six steps you agree on who the story is about, where it happens and how it should feel: a lighthouse keeper's cat who cannot find the stairs, a girl with a torch exploring a quiet museum, whatever came up that day. You choose the length, 10+, 15+ or 20+ minutes, and the language level. Wunderli writes the story and narrates it as an audio play, each character with its own voice. You press play, the screen goes dark, and when the story finishes, nothing else starts. The full sequence is on How Wunderli works.
Listen: a Wunderli story in English
The habit matters more than the device. In the National Literacy Trust's survey of children and young people's listening in 2024, 52.9% of the children and young people aged 8 to 18 who took part said listening to audio made them use their imagination more than watching videos. A player and an app both deliver audio; the difference is what you buy, who starts it and where the story comes from.
