Wunderli vs. Toniebox
Toniebox popularized screen-free audio for kids with a friendly hardware player and collectible figurines. Wunderli plays in the same space but replaces figurines with personal stories: your child picks the hero, place, theme, length and language level each time, and the app generates a new story.
What Wunderli is
An app for iPhone, iPad or Android. In six steps your child picks hero, place, theme, length and language level from a fixed catalogue we curate, and a new audio story is generated from those choices, narrated with several voices and music. Concretely:
- Every story is generated individually. There is no catalogue of pre-recorded tracks.
- 10+, 15+ or 20+ minutes, in three language levels from simple to advanced.
- German, English and French from day one, each written in that language rather than translated into it.
- Once generated, a story lives on the device and plays with no connection.
- No autoplay. When a story ends, nothing starts by itself.
- No extra hardware: it runs on the device you already own.
The full flow is on How it works.
What a Toniebox is
A padded cube speaker with no screen, built for small hands. Content arrives on figurines placed on top of the cube; each figurine carries a fixed recording, and further figurines are bought separately. The box plays without an internet connection, and there is a large library of licensed children's book and series titles. Those are the headline facts its maker advertises; anything further, in particular prices, range and features, is as stated by them.
Toniebox and tonies are trademarks of tonies SE. There is no business relationship with Wunderli. We name the product here only to distinguish it from ours. As of August 2026.
When a Toniebox is the better buy
- When no screen should appear at all, not even for choosing. Wunderli needs a few taps on a display before the screen can go dark.
- When the handling is the point. Placing a figurine is its own ritual, and a child can do it alone.
- When you want well-known series characters. Wunderli has no licensed titles.
- When there is already a collection on the shelf. It keeps working, independently of everything else.
Where Wunderli fits
- Multilingual families who want the same kind of story in three languages.
- Children who want to shape the story rather than choose between finished recordings.
- Travelling, when no extra device should come along. See screen-free activities for kids.
- Over the years, because language level and length move up with the child.
The two are not exclusive. Many families keep the box for the classic tales and use Wunderli for the personal ones.
Safety and privacy
For Wunderli: no third-party advertising in the app, no ad tracking, no child profiles. How that is implemented is on Child safety, and the full data processing is in the Privacy policy. What other providers do is set out in their own disclosures, not ours.
