How to create a bedtime story your child will love

Making up a bedtime story does not require a writer's brain. It requires a small structure that stays out of the way. This is the exact six-step method we use inside Wunderli and that you can copy tonight.

    1. Pick the hero

Ask your child a single question: who is the story about tonight? It can be them, a sibling, a favorite animal, or an invented character. When the child chooses the hero, they lean in. Passive listening becomes co-creation.

    2. Choose one world

One setting is enough. A forest, a ship, a snowy village, a moon base. Do not stack three worlds in one story. Children fall asleep to atmosphere, not to plot twists.

    3. Add a small problem

A missing key, a homesick star, a nervous baby dragon. Keep the stakes gentle. Bedtime is not the place for danger. A small problem gives the story a spine without waking anyone up.

    4. Set the length before you start

Ten minutes for ages 3 to 5. Fifteen minutes for 5 to 8. Twenty minutes for 8 and up. If you stretch past that, kids re-activate. See audio stories for children for why length matters more than most parents think.

    5. Wrap up softly

Solve the small problem. Bring the hero home. End on a quiet image: a fire crackling, a moon rising, a warm blanket. Never a cliffhanger. The last sentence is the doorway to sleep.

    6. Repeat the ritual

Same voice, same room, same rhythm. Predictability is the strongest sleep signal a child has. See bedtime stories for kids for the science behind bedtime routines.

    When you need a break

Some nights the tank is empty. That is what Wunderli was built for. The app follows this same six-step method, adds a child-safe voice, and offers 10, 15 and 20+ minute lengths so you can hand the story over without breaking the ritual. See how Wunderli works.
